Samsung rates the open-close durability of its foldable hinge at 200,000 cycles. At 100 folds a day that works out to 200,000 ÷ 36,500 ≈ 5.48 years. That division is the basis for Samsung's description of the figure as roughly five years of stable use.
The catch is the premise of 100 folds a day. That is a manufacturer's benchmark, not a description of any particular owner. Halve the folds and the lifespan doubles; double them and it halves. Until the 200,000-cycle spec is fed your own usage pattern, it tells you nothing.

Where the 200,000 figure comes from
Ahead of the Galaxy Z TriFold launch, Samsung released an official video walking through its durability verification. The main display went through 200,000 repeated folds, which the company frames as about five years at 100 folds per day. The same 200,000-cycle standard has appeared in Samsung's hinge durability guidance for earlier Fold and Flip generations.
Read carefully, 200,000 is a verification count for what the hinge and main display physically withstand — not a point at which failure is guaranteed, and not a warranty that nothing goes wrong before it. The test runs under controlled temperature, speed and fold angle. Real use adds variables the rig does not have: pressure inside a pocket, grit lodged in the hinge gap.
On the structural side Samsung emphasised two things: dual Armor Flex hinges integrated into a titanium frame, and a dual-titanium layer in the shock-absorbing stack beneath the display. Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic covers the front, and internal components are inspected with 3D laser scanning and high-speed CT scanning for assembly precision. Recent generations have moved toward reducing the hinge's own thickness and width to cut friction.

Your daily fold count sets the lifespan
Divide 200,000 by the number of folds per day and the answer falls out directly. The table assumes a 365-day year.

What stands out is the slope. Going from 100 folds a day to 150 costs 1.8 years, dropping the figure from 5.5 to 3.7. Going the other way, from 100 down to 50, buys 5.5 years, lifting it from 5.5 to 11.0. The same fifty folds are worth three times as much in one direction as the other. That is simply how division behaves: the fewer folds you make, the more each one saved is worth in time.
200,000 is not the device's lifespan. It is the numerator of a division whose answer depends on your habits.
On a foldable this number swings especially hard because of the cover screen. Handle notifications, calls and short replies there and the unfold count drops sharply. Ignore the cover screen and run everything on the main display, and 150 a day is entirely realistic. The key point in any foldable lifespan calculation is that screen-on count and fold count are not the same number.

The hinge is not the only part that has to last
More than one component sets the retirement date. The battery loses capacity as charge cycles accumulate, and that clock runs daily regardless of folding. On published specs the Galaxy Z Fold8 carries a 4,800mAh battery (4,660mAh rated), and applying the approach in converting charge cycles into years puts noticeable battery degradation well before the hinge reaches 200,000 folds.
Dust ingress rating also deserves separate attention on a foldable. A grain of sand in the hinge gap can cause trouble in one event, independent of cycle count. Why foldables carry a different ingress rating from conventional bar phones becomes clear once you look at what the first digit of an IP rating actually blocks. For the TriFold, Samsung said IPX8 water resistance testing was conducted from multiple angles.

Samsung's Fold8 spec page lists the main display at 193.2mm diagonal and the cover display at 138.4mm. Per the comparison page, the Ultra thins to 4.1mm unfolded while holding weight at 215g, identical to its predecessor. The TriFold folds twice, so it is the thinnest of the three when open at 3.9mm but reaches 12.9mm closed and 309g on the scale.

Who this suits
Translated into a buying decision, the durability spec simplifies things. If notifications, calls and short replies all happen on the cover screen, daily folds land somewhere between 30 and 50, and the 200,000-cycle figure works out to more than 11 years. At that point the hinge is not what decides your replacement cycle — battery health and software support windows arrive first.
If you keep the large display open for documents and multitasking, 150 folds a day is plausible and the calculation gives 3.7 years. That lands close to a typical carrier contract cycle, which makes resale value and the manufacturer's repair policy more practically relevant than hinge rating.
There is also a case for waiting. The 200,000-cycle verification covers the hinge and main display, and the TriFold — with one more folding axis — reports very different portability numbers at 309g and 12.9mm closed. Unless the large canvas is the point, that weight difference is a cost paid every day.
