The Galaxy Z Fold8 and the Z Fold8 Ultra are not a base model and a better one — they are two devices with different screen shapes. Samsung's published spec sheets list the Fold8's main panel at 193.2mm (1848×2448), a tall portrait shape, while the Ultra's is 203.1mm (2504×2256), close to a square. Weight runs 201g against 215g, and unfolded thickness 4.5mm against 4.1mm.

A 10mm difference in diagonal does not tell you how much screen that actually is, or what the extra 14g bought. Converting diagonal and resolution ratio into panel area is where the two devices separate.

Both run the same Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, offer the same 256GB/512GB/1TB storage tiers and the same RAM pairings. 8K 30fps capture, the 120Hz refresh rate and the 10MP F2.2 cover and front cameras overlap as well. The differences narrow to screen shape, weight and whether there is a telephoto module.

Converted to area, the gap is 14.3%

Given a diagonal and an aspect ratio, panel width and height can be solved directly. The Fold8's main panel works out to 116.4×154.2mm, or 179.5cm²; the Ultra's to 150.9×135.9mm, or 205.1cm². The diagonal is 5.1% longer, but the area is 14.3% larger. As the aspect ratio moves from 1.33:1 toward 1.11:1, each millimetre of diagonal carries more area.

Battery drain per hour of video playback is effectively identical. Despite 14.3% more screen area and a higher pixel count, the Ultra draws only 0.3% more per hour on the published playback figures — the larger panel is offset by 200mAh of extra capacity and panel efficiency. Neither spec sheet lists charging wattage, so capacity and wattage have to be read together, as in the charging-time calculation for a 4,800mAh cell.

What the extra 14g bought

The Ultra is 14g (7.0%) heavier, yet each gram carries 6.8% more display area. On an area basis it is the more efficient allocation. The trade shows up in bulk: folded volume rises from 98.4cm³ to 102.6cm³ (+4.3%), and weight per volume from 2.04 to 2.09 g/cm³ — a denser object in the hand.

A 5% difference in diagonal is a 14% difference in area. On a foldable, aspect ratio decides more than the size label does.

The telephoto module is part of that weight. The Fold8 pairs a 50MP wide with a 50MP ultra-wide for 2x optical and 10x digital zoom; the Ultra adds a 10MP telephoto beside a 200MP wide. A 200MP sensor and a separate telephoto stack both add camera-island volume and mass.

Folded is where they split: 81.9mm versus 72.8mm

On published specs, the sharpest divide is the closed shape. Folded, the Fold8 measures 123.9×81.9mm and the Ultra 158.4×72.8mm. The Ultra is a conventional 72.8mm-wide phone body wearing a 21:9 cover panel (2520×1080); the Fold8 is short and broad — 81.9mm wide, 123.9mm tall — with a 1.58:1 cover.

The Ultra's cover area is 13.6% larger at 98.3cm², but the Fold8's wider cover ratio suits two-handed use and document-shaped layouts while closed. For one-handed vertical scrolling, the 72.8mm width sits closer to the standard form. Folded thickness is 9.7mm against 8.9mm, making the Ultra 0.8mm slimmer.

Neither spec page states an ingress protection rating. Why foldable ratings differ in the dust digit is covered in the IP68 versus IP48 breakdown.

Who each one fits, and who should wait

  • If the unfolded canvas does the work — documents, spreadsheets, video editing — the Ultra's 205.1cm² also wins on area per gram
  • If most use happens folded and one-handed, the Ultra's 72.8mm width is closer to a standard phone; the Fold8 is 81.9mm
  • Skipping the telephoto saves 14g and 4.3% of folded volume with the Fold8's 2x optical, 10x digital setup
  • Anyone who prefers a wide cover layout will read the Fold8's 1.58:1 cover as the better shape
  • If charging wattage or an IP rating is a deciding condition, neither spec sheet publishes one — worth waiting for the product page detail to be updated
