Between the phrase "AI laptop" and the phrase "Copilot+ PC" sits a line made of numbers. Microsoft's minimum for a Copilot+ PC is an NPU of at least 40 TOPS, at least 16GB of RAM and at least 256GB of storage. Miss any one of the three and the exclusive AI feature set never unlocks.

The New Galaxy Book6, launched in Korea on 1 September, lists up to 15 TOPS and 8GB of RAM on the manufacturer's own specifications. The standard model carrying the same series name lists 49 TOPS and 16GB or more. Models on either side of that line are sold under one name, so the number matters more than the badge.

Copilot+ is a spec threshold, not a slogan

Microsoft defines a Copilot+ PC as a machine with an NPU capable of 40 TOPS or more, 16GB of RAM, 256GB or more of storage and Windows 11 version 24H2 or later. Supported silicon spans Snapdragon X, Intel Core Ultra and AMD Ryzen AI parts.

Clearing that bar unlocks Recall, Cocreator, Live Captions with translation from over 40 languages into English subtitles, Windows Studio Effects and AI editing in the Photos app. All of it runs locally on the NPU rather than in the cloud, which is precisely why the requirement exists. The 40 is not a bragging figure; it is an unlock condition.

TOPS counts trillions of operations per second. It is a theoretical integer-throughput figure rather than a measure of felt performance, so identical TOPS can behave differently depending on software optimisation. What it does decide cleanly is whether a machine is inside or outside Copilot+.

Samsung's newsroom lists the New Galaxy Book6 as an Intel Core 3 Processor 304 or Core 5 Processor 315 with an Intel NPU up to 15 TOPS, 8GB of LPDDR5X, a 256GB NVMe SSD and a 14-inch WUXGA (1920×1200) IPS panel at 350 nits. The battery is 61.2Wh, rated up to 25 hours of video playback, and pricing runs 1.19m to 1.49m won.

Seoul Economic Daily framed it as a value model 410,000 to 1,020,000 won cheaper than the existing standard version priced at 1.6m to 2.51m won, noting that the standard model carries a 49 TOPS NPU, 16GB to 32GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. It also lists 1.35kg and up to 33% charge in 30 minutes.

The Edge model at the top of the range sits on a different axis. Samsung's product page lists a Snapdragon X2 Elite platform supporting up to 80 TOPS, a 16-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X at 2,880×1,800 and 120Hz, and 512GB of eUFS storage.

Between "AI laptop" and "Copilot+ PC" lie 25 TOPS and 8GB of RAM.

What the 410,000 won gap buys

The gap between the two entry prices is 410,000 won. Using only published figures, here is what that money exchanges for. Price per TOPS divides the entry price by NPU TOPS; the ratio rows divide each spec by the Copilot+ minimum.

MeasureNew Galaxy Book6Galaxy Book6 standardDifference
NPU vs requirement (%)37.5122.5+85.0pp
RAM vs requirement (%)50.0100–200+50pp or more
Storage vs requirement (%)100up to 400+300pp
Entry price (KRW)1,190,0001,600,000+410,000
Price per TOPS (KRW)79,33332,653−46,680
Cost per added TOPS (KRW)12,059

The arithmetic is plain: 1,190,000 ÷ 15 = 79,333 won per TOPS, and 1,600,000 ÷ 49 = 32,653 won. On the NPU alone, the cheaper machine costs 2.4 times more per unit of throughput. Dividing the 410,000 won gap by the 34 additional TOPS gives 12,059 won each, with 8GB of RAM and the whole Copilot+ feature set riding along.

Read the other way, the 410,000 won saved is the price of giving up 34 TOPS, 8GB of RAM and on-device AI features. At 8GB the machine sits at half the Copilot+ memory requirement, so it misses the bar even setting the NPU aside. How to read the processor tier in the model name is covered in what X, H and 25W mean in Core Ultra naming.

The NPU only works in narrow moments

An NPU is not a continuously loaded part. As Microsoft's own feature list shows, it steps in for specific calls — video-call background processing, live caption translation, photo editing, local search. For document work and browsing, CPU and memory dominate what you actually feel.

So 15 TOPS is not by itself a statement of weakness. It simply means the Copilot+ feature set never opens, which makes it rational not to pay for silicon you will not call, and equally means 15 is closer to zero than to half if you do plan to call it. Unlike most specs, this one has no middle value.

Storage behaves similarly. 256GB meets the requirement exactly and leaves no headroom, and felt speed often depends on interface generation more than capacity — covered separately in the conditions under which Gen4 and Gen5 feel identical.

Who it fits, and who should wait

👍 The New Galaxy Book6 fits if
  • documents, browsing and video make up most of your use and on-device AI is not on the list
  • portability matters most — 14 inches, 1.35kg, up to 25 hours of playback
  • you want a new machine with local service inside a 1.19m won budget
👎 Look at the standard model or above if
  • Recall, live caption translation or Studio Effects are the point — 15 TOPS and 8GB miss the requirement
  • you run virtual machines, edit large images, or keep dozens of tabs open — 8GB binds first
  • you plan to keep it three years or more — the LPDDR5X memory is soldered, with no upgrade path

Three lines to check on any purchase page: is the NPU figure 40 TOPS or higher, is RAM 16GB or higher, is storage above 256GB. Only when all three hold does a Copilot+ label on the page translate into working features.
