In July and August, Korean residential electricity crosses a cliff at 450kWh: the standing charge leaps from 1,600 won to 7,300 won and the marginal energy rate rises to 307.3 won per kWh. Applying KEPCO's published tariff, a household using exactly 450kWh faces an estimated bill of 85,740 won; one using 451kWh pays 92,530 won. A single kilowatt-hour costs 6,790 won.
That is why air conditioning bills resist prediction. The same eight hours of cooling can cost more than twice as much depending on whether the rest of the household already burns 200kWh or 350kWh. What follows rebuilds those numbers from nothing but the product label and the published tariff.

How many kWh per hour — reading it off the label
Multiplying rated power draw by hours almost always overstates an inverter unit. The rated figure applies when the compressor runs flat out, and it ignores the low-speed maintenance phase after the room reaches the set temperature.
Use the cooling seasonal performance factor (CSPF) on the label instead. CSPF is total cooling output over a season divided by the electricity consumed over the same period. Invert the definition and hourly consumption falls out.
hourly consumption (kWh) = cooling capacity (kW) ÷ CSPF
For a 6.6kW floor-standing unit at 6.5, the average efficiency of standing models released in 2023–2024, that comes to 1.02kWh per hour. Wall units average 6.2, so a 2.5kW model draws 0.40kWh per hour. Over a month at eight hours a day: 244kWh for the standing unit, 97kWh for the wall unit. That is the load stacked on top of existing usage.
One caveat: CSPF is a seasonal average. During a heatwave with outdoor temperatures at 35°C, compressor load rises and real consumption runs above this estimate. Treat the figures below as a floor.
Why 6,790 won hangs on one kilowatt-hour
Summer tiers are widened. The first-tier ceiling rises from 200kWh to 300kWh and the second from 400kWh to 450kWh. On top of that, a climate-environment charge of 9 won/kWh and a fuel-cost adjustment of 5 won/kWh apply to total usage, and 10% VAT plus a 2.7% electricity industry fund levy are added at the end. That levy was cut in two steps, to 3.2% in July 2024 and 2.7% in July 2025.
Stack it all and each tier yields a true marginal cost: add 14 won to the energy rate, multiply by 1.127.

Crossing a boundary adds a separate step in the standing charge. Going from 300kWh to 301kWh raises it by 690 won, or 778 won after tax and levy, plus 258 won for the kilowatt-hour itself: 1,036 won at once. The 450kWh boundary is far steeper. The 5,700 won gap times 1.127 gives 6,424 won, plus 362 won, for 6,786 won — effectively identical to the reported 6,790 won.

A summer electricity bill turns less on how many kilowatt-hours the air conditioner uses than on which tier those kilowatt-hours land in.
Hours per day, translated into won
Take a household consuming 250kWh before any cooling. Adding the consumption derived above to the tariff structure gives the following. VAT is taken to the won; the levy and the total are truncated to the nearest 10 won.

Watch where proportionality breaks. Doubling standing-unit runtime from four hours to eight exactly doubles consumption, but the attributable cost goes from 26,880 won to 69,330 won — a factor of 2.58. At four hours the extra load sits mostly in the second tier at 258 won; at eight hours total usage reaches 494kWh and much of it spills into the third tier at 362 won.
The reverse holds for low-baseline households. A home using 150kWh that runs a standing unit four hours a day totals 272kWh, still inside tier one, so all 122kWh price at 151 won. The attributable cost is roughly 18,400 won — same unit, same hours, 32% cheaper than the 26,880 won paid by the 250kWh household.
Inverter versus fixed-speed, in label numbers
Inverter units vary compressor speed and keep running slowly once the set temperature is reached. Fixed-speed units drive at full output until the target is hit, stop the compressor, then restart at full output when the room warms. CSPF, which folds in part-load operation, exposes the gap directly.
Holding a 6.6kW standing unit at eight hours a day and varying only the label CSPF, against a 250kWh baseline:

The spread between CSPF 7.0 and 4.0 is 61,560 won a month — over 120,000 won across a two-month peak season. On published specifications alone, the efficiency grade can recover its price premium within a few seasons. The same source cites a real case where an 18-pyeong standing unit cost 53,000 won a month at grade 1 versus 69,000 won at grade 3. The absolute figures differ from the table because the baseline usage and runtime assumptions differ; the direction and magnitude do not.
If a fixed-speed unit is already installed, read its CSPF and use the matching row. For older units that list only rated power draw and no CSPF, multiplying the rated figure by 0.85 to 1.0 gives a closer average, since output stays nearly constant while running.

When replacement pays, and when it can wait
Turn the arithmetic around and a decision rule appears. Everything hinges on whether the household lands above 450kWh in summer.
- Summer usage above 450kWh — each extra kilowatt-hour costs 362 won. A 1.0 difference in CSPF is worth roughly 10,000 won a month, which is where payback on a high-efficiency unit is shortest
- Summer usage staying under 300kWh — each extra kilowatt-hour costs 151 won. The same CSPF improvement returns about 40% of what a third-tier household saves, which is thin ground for replacing a working unit
- Baseline usage in the 400s — you are on the edge. Work out how many cooling hours push you past 450kWh before shopping. Shifting laundry and drying to keep two summer months below the line costs nothing
- Choosing between wall and standing — cooling capacity is consumption. At identical CSPF, a 6.6kW standing unit draws 2.6 times what a 2.5kW wall unit does per hour. Oversizing for the room is not recovered by an efficiency grade
- Reading order on the label — cooling capacity (kW), then CSPF, then rated power draw (W). The first two determine the bill; the third matters for instantaneous load and breaker sizing
