Why 4K 120Hz Won't Run on 2.0
The data a single video frame demands can be estimated as width × height × refresh rate × color depth (RGB, 3 channels). Computing the required bandwidth for key modes uncompressed (RGB 4:4:4) and comparing it against each version's effective data shows exactly where you hit a wall.

Even at the same 4K resolution, the moment you add refresh rate and color depth the required bandwidth doubles or triples — that number, not the connector, decides whether the picture appears.

Do You Need a New Cable?
A 2.1 device is useless if the cable can't keep up. To carry HDMI 2.1's 48Gbps losslessly you need a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Older High Speed (2.0-class) cables only guarantee 18Gbps, so if the screen flickers or drops signal at 4K 120Hz, suspect the cable first. Certified cables carry a QR authentication mark on the packaging, and since longer runs lose more bandwidth, staying within 3 meters is advised.

- To hear lossless Atmos through a soundbar, first confirm eARC support on both the TV and the soundbar.
- If you only watch movies and OTT at 4K 60Hz, existing HDMI 2.0 and a High Speed cable are enough — no real reason to switch.
- The lower of device port and cable grade caps performance. If 4K 120Hz won't display, check first whether the cable is certified Ultra High Speed.
- 8K still requires DSC even on 2.1. With 8K content scarce today, 4K 120Hz support is the practical benchmark.
